February is known for being all about love. Considering one of the most classic love stories ever told – Romeo and Juliet, we thought we would recap some facts and show you how you can bring the romance into your modern-day home.

The famous Romeo and Juliet balcony can be found in Verona, Italy, connected to a building called La Casa di Guilietta (House of Juliet). The building originated in the 12th or 13th century and is said to have been home to the family who served as the inspiration for the Capulet family in the story of Romeo and Juliet. On this balcony, one of Shakespeare’s most famous adapted scenes takes place, with Juliet talking to Romeo whilst leaning over the cherished balcony.

What is the Romeo and Juliet balcony like?

The Romeo and Juliet balcony in Verona is made from parts of a 17th century sarcophagus, as it was added to the building at a later date, and so is more modern that the House of Juliet. With a medieval design, the balcony has just enough space for someone to step onto from the house, and it overlooks a courtyard holding a statue of Juliet.

Although in Shakespeare’s original written story the presence of a balcony is sorely missing, the famously picturesque balcony in Verona acts as a beautiful site of tourism to many that visit the city. It has also served as inspiration for future architectural advances!

How has the famous balcony inspired modern balconies?

Modern day Juliet balconies are inspired by the revered balcony found in Verona and can help you bring some of the romantic atmosphere into your home’s design. A Juliet balcony is fitted to the side of a dormer loft conversion, but it doesn’t have a platform for you to walk out onto. It will be placed in front of bi-fold or French doors, letting natural light into your room. You will be able to open up the doors and invite the fresh air into your room, whilst still benefitting from the balcony that could prevent any falls. Juliet balconies help you merge the outside world with that of the inside of your loft conversion, helping you promote that romantic feel that the real Juliet might have been feeling!
