West Norwood is a mainly residential area of south London. Its name recalls the great North Wood which described the hilly wooded area north of Croydon.
Regenerated in recent years, it hosts the West Norwood Feast, a popular monthly community market featuring music, stalls and community events, and contains landmarks such as the famous neoclassical St Luke’s Church, and West Norwood Cemetery, one of London’s ‘Magnificent Seven’ Victorian burial places, with sixty-six listed Gothic structures. The Mrs Woodford Fawcett Fountain is named for a local temperance campaigner who along with the philanthropists Sir Henry Tate (architect of Tate Britain) and Frederick Nettlefold, are buried in West Norwood Cemetery. Most of the roads in West Norwood are based on ancient rights of way, bordering the River Effra, and parts of the area have been declared conservation areas.
West Norwood has been home to many well-known residents including singer Adele, Bilinda Butcher, musician, Euan Uglow, artist, Hiram Maxim, who designed his machine gun in the garden of his house there, Sir John Scarlett, the former head of MI6, Thomas Wallis, art deco architect, and Ken Livingstone, former mayor of London.
