South Norwood is a district of South East London. The area was once covered by the Great North Wood, a natural oak forest covering four miles of South London. The south-eastern side of South Norwood contains a 125-acre country park, and at the north end is the South Norwood Lake, formed from the reservoir of the Croydon Canal. This is a magnet for local anglers, and is used by the Croydon Sailing Club.
Another park and lake, called Brickfields Meadow, was built on the site of Handley’s Brickworks, whose seven chimneys once dominated the view of the area. Over twenty pubs were once found within one small area lining the Croydon Canal, where bricks were loaded onto barges, including The Goat House, said to commemorate an island in the canal on which goats were grazed, but only the most famous, the Jolly Sailor, and The Ship, survive from this time.
Arthur Conan Doyle once lived in South Norwood, where he wrote the Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure Of The Norwood Builder, and author D. H. Lawrence taught at Davidson School in South Norwood before the 1st World War.
Other famous residents include Julian Maclaren-Ross, author, Robert Calvert, poet, Samuel Coleridge Taylor, composer, Harry Carpenter, boxing commentator, and Dame Stella Rimington, first female head of MI5.
